Manchester City have reportedly decided to part ways with long-term number one Ederson this summer, settling on Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa as one of the “top candidates” to replace him.

The Portuguese shot-stopper has put together an impressive body of work during four seasons as Porto’s number one. The current campaign may not have been his best – his side are not only out of the title race but currently sit outside the division’s top three – but Costa still boasts a league-high tally of 15 clean sheets.

Sky Germany claim that Ederson is increasingly likely to leave City this summer. The Brazilian’s agent has already begun negotiations with other clubs about a summer exit and his “preferred destination” is billed as the Saudi Pro League. Costa has emerged as City’s ideal replacement.

The 25-year-old’s stock is high enough to also attract interest from Manchester United. The Red Devils have been linked with a wide array of goalkeeping options following a run of indifferent form from Andre Onana.

Ruben Amorim recently took the Cameroon international out of the firing line after a particularly poor display against Lyon in the Europa League quarter-final first leg, stoking the flames of speculation surrounding a goalkeeper search. Guardiola has experimented with benching Ederson this season and has currently lost his waning custodian to injury.

Ederson was heavily linked with a move away from the Etihad last summer, with numerous Saudi Pro League clubs tipped to snap up the Brazilian before he opted to stay in Manchester. However, nagging fitness issues and a notable dip in form have reopened the conversation about a potential exit this summer.

“He knew from day one that I didn’t want him to leave,” Guardiola revealed at the start of the season. “The truth is the offer didn’t come. The real offer.

“They make an offer but the keeper, who won four Premier Leagues in a row, he has a value and a price. Otherwise, he cannot leave. If the offer did come, maybe he should not be here. This is the truth.”

A more suitable offer for Ederson may very well arrive this summer – and City’s valuation of the keeper has no doubt been altered by a dire campaign.
