Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has been tipped to resist “numerous lucrative and interesting enquiries” this summer, even though Pep Guardiola has hinted a sale could be possible.

Gundogan signed a one-year deal when he left Barcelona to return to City on a free transfer last summer, having spent just a single season with the cash-strapped Catalans.

But a 12-month extension clause in that deal was triggered, pushing the contract’s expiration until the summer of 2026 instead. Even with that security, the City boss hadn’t ruled out another split: “What will happen, I don’t know.”

Now, however, Sky Sport Germany’s Florian Plettenberg has reported that Gundogan intends to honour the remainder of the contract in Manchester. He has “no plans” to either leave the club or retire from professional football altogether.

The 34-year-old does have interest from other clubs. The identity of such suitors is not known, although the Saudi Pro League would be an obvious option. The Super Lig would be another, amid links in recent months with Fenerbahce and Galatasaray, and his family’s Turkish heritage.

Gundogan initially left City for a new challenge in 2023 off the back of captaining the club to an historic treble. Even getting older, he has still started 22 Premier League games this season and has made 45 total appearances and counting across all competitions.

But a squad rebuild is already underway at City, with Kevin De Bruyne’s impending summer departure confirmed after he wasn’t offered a new contract, and Bernardo Silva also linked with an exit to boyhood club Benfica. Nico Gonzalez arrived in January to kickstart the midfield overhaul, with Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Florian Wirtz another serious target amid ongoing links with Morgan Gibbs-White, Bruno Guimaraes and Hugo Larsson.
