After a flurry of transfer rumours spawned by comments from his father, Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has belatedly addressed the controversial topic of his future.

Several corners of the Spanish press claimed that Real Madrid were monitoring the Argentine World Cup winner. Mac Allister has undoubtedly impressed after almost two years of continued consistency for Liverpool, although these links happened to coincidentally surface after the midfielder’s father, Carlos, left the door open to an exit in the future.

When faced with a wave of criticism, Carlos Mac Allister was forced to conduct another interview to clarify his comments, insisting that “Alexis is very happy in Liverpool”.

Having watched the drama unfold from the sidelines, Alexis himself confronted the speculation. “I read the rumours and the news reaches me, but the important thing is the present,” the 26-year-old told TyC Sports. “As much as the club wants me, if I play poorly this weekend, they’ll lose interest.”

“I’m fine at Liverpool and I don’t have any need,” Mac Allister continued. “So I have a lot of respect for the club and I don’t think it’s necessary to talk about other institutions.”

Mac Allister had a fleet of suitors after forcing his way into Argentina’s starting XI at the 2022 World Cup. It was the influence of Jurgen Klopp which persuaded him to swap Brighton for Merseyside, but he has continued to thrive under Arne Slot this term.

“I’m a bit remote, so some fans greet you with respect, but in the city they’re more passionate,” Mac Allister said of his life in Liverpool. “The institution is like a family. It all comes down to one phrase: You’ll never walk alone.

“The moment of the anthem is incredibly powerful. One of the most beautiful. The game doesn’t start until it finishes playing.”
