Marcus Rashford may have played his final game for Aston Villa after suffering what reports suggest is a season-ending hamstring injury.

The Manchester United loanee was a surprise omission from the Villa squad which fell to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday, with manager Unai Emery subsequently confirming Rashford was likely to be missing for “some weeks”.

He is set to be sent for further tests but The Athletic state Rashford, while unlikely to require surgery, is not expected to play again this season.

Even if Rashford does recover before the season ends, he would be ineligible for Villa’s final game of the campaign against parent side United.

Instead, Rashford’s focus is now on recovering in time for the next England camp in June, having done enough to earn a spot in Thomas Tuchel’s first squad in March.

Rashford’s long-term future is up in the air, with Villa thought to be undecided about triggering a purchase option in their agreement with United which is understood to be worth £40m.

There have been claims that Rashford’s strong form with Villa – four goals and six assists in 17 games – had left United hopeful of being able to sell the winger for more to another club. A fee of closer to £60m has been touted.

Long-term admirers Paris Saint-Germain were recently reported to have reignited their interest in Rashford, while claims from Spain state the 27-year-old is determined to join Barcelona after the La Liga leaders were priced out of a January move.
