Real Madrid are confident that the ankle sprain Kylian Mbappe sustained during Wednesday’s defeat to Arsenal will not force him to miss this month’s Copa del Rey final against Barcelona, according to multiple reports in Spain.

Mbappe awkwardly twisted his ankle while trying and failing to rob Declan Rice of the ball in the second half of Arsenal’s 2-1 victory at the Santiago Bernabeu. It proved to be the frustrating conclusion to an underwhelming night for Madrid’s leading scorer, who limped out of a game in which his only significant contribution was failing to win a penalty.

With their European elimination confirmed, Madrid’s focus soon shifted to their La Liga title race against Barcelona and the Copa del Rey showpiece fixture on 26 April. MARCA were the first to report that Mbappe would be available for the cup final Clasico at the end of the month after suffering a “mild” ankle sprain.

Madrid were always planning to host Athletic Club on Sunday evening without their French talisman after he was slapped with a one-match suspension following a forceful foul on Alaves’ Antonio Blanco last week. However, multiple Spanish outlets claim that Mbappe will also be overlooked for the local derby against Getafe on Wednesday, 23 April to ensure he is in the best possible condition for the Copa del Rey climax three days later.

That lofty fixture at Seville’s unpopular La Cartuja stadium could very well be Carlo Ancelotti’s final game at the helm of Real Madrid. Given the four-point gap to Barcelona in La Liga and the underwhelming nature of the club’s Champions League title defence, it has been claimed that Madrid are preparing to part ways with the Italian coach straight after the final.

After Jurgen Klopp’s agent distanced his client from a potential move to the Spanish capital, talk of Xabi Alonso’s impending arrival has been ratcheted up.
